Gillette Speedway 7-16-11

Here are the videos from Saturday night in Gillette. I pointed the camera backwards for something different. I was leading the heat and went too high in turn 3 trying to lap a car and went over the high side. I kept it going and still saved a third place finish.  The main was very dry and I ended up 2nd to Wade Manning # 50.

More in car camera action !

I had to get new Video editing software to help me cut out the cautions in the videos. This was a very hard fought out battle with #50 Wade Manning ( my nephew ) , # 70 X Steve Schicketanz, and my self ( Tommy Manning # 307 ). It took me a while to learn my new video software ( PowerDirector) so far I like it.  Well here is the Video from Capser Speedway 6-3-11.

Casper Opening night and Gillette 2nd night

Well it was a good weekend for the Scot's Machine Shop powered # 307 Wissota Mod Four.  Friday night in Casper, Wy I got a bad start in the heat and still got second. The sun was a killer coming off of turn four, as you will see in the video. The main was a very hard fought battle with Steve Schicketanz in the # 70X and myself.  We traded the lead back and forth while lapping cars. It was a fun race with very little contact. I only had a hint of a tire donut on my door.  Here are the in car video of the heat and main. They watered the track after the heats. And I need to get the camera tearoffs.....  Sorry about the end of the main video.

Dumb me forgot to charge the camera for Saturday night, so no in car from Gillette, sorry. I did get a clean sweep winning both my heat and main.  They also annouced the car show winners, and I won the car show for the mod four class. I would like to thank my sponsor 307 Wyoming Clothing and also thank everyone for checking out my blog.  Till next week..... with charged batteries....

First Night Out.

Drove down to Casper, WY for the car show, then high tailed it back to Gillette to race. As I was loading up at the car show in Casper I lost first gear in my tranny.  Yes not a good sign of things to come.  I was in the second heat of mod four of the night. Good news car is fast.  Bad news second gear in the tranny only lasted two and one half laps, and the lost third trying to get off the track.  Loaded up the car raced back to the shop, changed out transmissions in about a half an hour, the back to the track, just in time to see the end of the mod four main.  Man it was worth a try. My Nephew Wade # 50  got a clean sweep winning both his heat ( heat one ) and the main. My Brother had his idler pulley on his timing belt lock up, stopping his engine and ending his night. We do have the cars all fixed and ready to go ( I hope ) for Casper Speedway opener on Friday.  So a short in car of the heat race.

Chassis Done !

Yep got the Chassis done. Got it painted. Now waiting for the paint to dry, yes waiting for paint to dry is as fun as everyone says it is....

I need to clean up and paint most of my bolt on parts and hopfuly have it up and rolling around by the end of next week.

Off the Jig and on the floor. We rolled the frame onto it's side to weld up the bottom side, then clean up and paint.

Something living in your racecar ?

This old Chassis has been laying aroud for a few years.  Some critter took up residents in the rear clip of the chassis. I had to shorten the rear of the frame also. I cut the rear of the frame off and found a nest on both sides inside the frame rails. There are blind nuts in the frame for weight mounts that must have been how the little critters got in there.  I was just glad they were all gone by the time I got there.

More leg protection !

I love racing but going back to work on monday morning is also important, so I added more leg protection and plated the door bars.
I also got the steering done, clutch pedal done seat mounted, fuel cell and batt box mounted, and radiator installed.  Next is body mounts and start knocking out some tin.

Pissed off weed eater !

For those of you that are not around this class very often. They sound like pissed off weed eaters on the track.  This is the only video I could find for Wissota Mod 4's.

Engine and Transmission mounts

Everything was going together so well, then came time to make mounts for the engine and transmission.  First off I had to cut the " X " out of the car. The engine and tranny both hit the X.  After moving the engine around, then trying to get a little clearance for the header, I think I got it where it needs to be. Then I make the mounts for the engine. I had a little more trouble with the frame mount to the engine. I hate blind nut mounts. If the threads go bad there is not much yu can do to fix them. I wanted to have a regular mount with a bolt and a nut. The first set of frame mounts I wasn't happy with so I did get what I was looking for with the second set.  They are still tacked in, I will weld them in after I double check everything.

Rear end...

Saturday I got started on mounting the rearend.  Finally getting to use some of the new parts I just bought !

The rear end is done at this point. I still need to order a few more parts for the rear end and the steering.

After stopping sunday night the rearend was all done and the front end was also done.  Next on the list
I think is steering and pedals.

Parts !

Parts came in on friday so I had a busy weekend on the car.

Friday night I got the front hoop bent up and welded up. Starting to look like something now !

This wrapped up friday night .

Sneak Peek

I know I'm a long ways from wrapping the car, but this is how I think it will look.  I changed my number this year from 54 to 307 for my friends clothing company.  Check out the 307 Chronicles in the link above or thier website at http://www.307wyo.com/ .

more on the transformation.

Well I got done with my first parts order, I'm sure there will be more. Yes racing is expensive !  My engine was built by Scot's Machine shop in Fergus Falls, MN. See link above. I also had a new header built by Laske in Fargo, ND.
Making the square tube to mate the latemodel chassis to the pinto front end was a little tricky. I made templates of ea side of the tube and tranfered that to the square tubing. It worked great, with just a few trips to the bench grinder i had pieces that fit.

Latemodel to mod 4

A year ago my brother Duane made a Wissota mod 4 racecar out of an old square tube dirt latemodel chassis.  I am doing the same this year and decided to share the tranformation.

The chassis I am starting with is an old Harris Latemodel.  After getting the Jig in the shop and leveled out, I started cutting away all the old parts of the latemodel I did not need anymore.

At this point hard to believe this will be a little mod 4.All cut up.

Front end and rear end mocked up. Can start to
see the mod 4 transformation coming about.
